Abortion

Regarding the teaching that the soul is not continuously present within the fetus from the time of inception: For those of us who believe that abortion is wrong, how does this teaching impact that belief? Is it still wrong to abort a fetus that is just a body with no soul?

Spirit: It is not correct to believe that the fetus is "just a body with no soul" simply because the soul of the newborn is not constantly present within the developing body. That soul is committed to that body, and is very soundly attached, you might say, to that body. So those who believe that abortion destroys both a soul and a body are not incorrect to think that the soul and body are intertwined from conception. Conception does not take place until a soul has been assigned to the baby that will develop. However, the belief that abortion destroys the soul is not one we Master Teacher Guides can support, because once created a soul is eternal and can never be destroyed. If the fetus is intentionally aborted, that soul will seek another way to enter the Earthplane, either by returning to the same parents or by finding another set of parents.

However, do not misunderstand me to say that abortion is considered casually here. The reason it is not is because the decision to knowingly abort a child is a decision to negate a life that has been carefully planned here for many reasons, all based in love. I am not going to discuss whether or not abortion can ever be justified, for to do so is to make general judgments about individual life choices. But I am going to tell you that to choose to destroy life in such a blatant fashion is a choice that can and often does affect the soul making that decision in multiple ways for many lives to come, just as is the choice that some in your culture call "mercy killing." Again, each soul’s choices are reviewed at the end of their life on Earth and it is then that the decision is made about whether or not such actions can be explained in Love. I will tell you that usually they cannot. Usually, these actions are based in Fear, despite the rationalizations that are given. There are occasional exceptions, yes. The norm is that this destruction of life is based in Fear and is wrong. But it is not wrong depending on whether the soul is visiting the body of the developing fetus at the time or not. It is wrong because it is destroying a carefully planned life and the opportunity to learn Love.

Spirit: We’ve mentioned that there are times when it is permitted for the soul to abandon the fetus, and I know some of you wonder about this. What we are referring to was not intentional abortions caused by the mother’s decision not to have a child. We are talking about cases where the embryo cannot develop sufficiently to sustain life. The soul does not have to wait the weeks or occasionally a month or two until natural abortion occurs; it can go ahead and search for a new set of parents, thus "abandoning" the physical beginnings that it was hoped would develop into a baby that soul could inhabit. In these cases, the soul often waits for a subsequent pregnancy by the same parents, but this is not always the case. In either event, it is permitted for the soul not to continue to visit the embryo that we can see will be aborted naturally. I hope this explanation helps.
